What was rumored a few weeks ago is now official. Gastón Gaudio confirmed, after Argentina’s victory over Belarus for the Davis cup, that he will cease to be the captain of the team.
“This is the last series I’m going to be on. One stage was over, I had a spectacular time, it was to feel again an adrenaline that I hadn’t had for 15 years” El Gato said after Diego Schwartzman defeated Alexander Zgirovsky and gave the victory to the Albiceleste team.
Gaudio took command of the Argentine team after the departure of Daniel Orsanic in 2018. His debut took place at the Aldo Cantoni stadium in San Juan, with a 4-0 victory over Colombia for the World Group playoff.
Then, during the Madrid finals in 2019, he led Argentina’s victory over Chile 3-0 and defeats against Germany (0-3) and Spain (1-2). In March 2020 they would lose to Colombia (1-3) for the first round of the qualifying stage and, with the aforementioned victory against Belarus, Gaudio says goodbye to the captaincy of Argentina with a 50% effectiveness in command of the team: three victories and three defeats.
While there is no official confirmation yet, the replacement for the former world number five and Roland Garros champion in 2004 would be Guillermo “El Mago” Coria.
