Naomi Osaka, current world No. 8, will not play the last WTA 1000 of the 2021 season in Indian Wells. This was confirmed by the American tournament this Wednesday through its Twitter account.
The 23-year-old Japanese comes with a convulsed 2021 season: was a champion at the Australian Open, withdrew from Roland Garros to take care of his mental health, lit the cauldron at the Tokyo Olympics, went three months without playing on the circuit (including Wimbledon) and returned to Cincinnati to play the US tour where he participated in the US Open. There, he fell in the third round to Leylah Fernandez, who would reach the final of the tournament. At a press conference, Osaka reiterated his discomfort and said he did not know when he would compete again. So far, Osaka played 24 games in the year (18-6).
Osaka was the 2018 Indian Wells Champion, the first of seven titles he has in his career.
