Peñarol will face Athlético Paranaense this Thursday in its Champion of the Century stadium for the first leg of the semifinal of the CONMEBOL South American Cup. For this encounter, Aurinegro coach Mauricio Larriera is expected to repeat the starting eleven he used in the first two dates of the Clausura Tournament.
Without suspended and with Facundo Torres already recovered from his injury (stretching of the external lateral ligament of the right ankle), the only possible modification would be the return to the starting team of Valentín Rodríguez on the left side by Juan Manuel Ramos, although it is unlikely that he will make this change.
In the first leg of the Round of 16 against Sporting Cristal on Wednesday, August 11, Rodríguez played as a starter, but Ramos had only had a very few training sessions with Peñarol having joined earlier that month.
For the rematch against Cristal, it was Torres who had to leave the team when he was injured in Lima, so Ramos made his debut on the left side and Valentín went on to play in the shuttlecock zone. Manya’s next match was for the last date of the Uruguayan Championship Opening Tournament, which Ramos was not yet eligible to play for; Thus, Rodríguez remained against South America in defense and Cristian Olivera was one of the outside midfielders in the absence of Torres.
After the stoppage for the triple playoff date, Peñarol officially returned to play on Sunday, September 12, making his debut in the Clausura with a 2-1 victory over Plaza in Colonia. With Ramos enabled for the local tournament and with Torres recovered, Larriera lined up an eleven that seems to begin to recite from memory, repeating it for the next game against Fénix (tie 0-0 for date 2 of the Clausura last Friday, September 17) .
Unless Rodríguez appears on the left side, this Thursday against Paranaense, Larriera will elect these eleven again: Kevin Dawson in goal, defenders Giovanni González, Carlos Rodríguez, Gary Kagelmacher and Juan Ramos; in the middle will be Agustín Canobbio, Walter Gargano, Jesús Trindade, Pablo Ceppellini and Facundo Torres; and the reference of the attack will be the Canary Agustín Álvarez Martínez.
