Peñarol vs. Athletico-PR - Match Report - September 23, 2021

(EFE) – With goals from David Terans and Pedro Rocha, the Brazilian Athletico Paranaense beat Peñarol 2-1 in Montevideo and took an important step towards the final of the South American Cup, with 90 minutes remaining in Brazil.

They had barely run two minutes when the visitor struck for the first time. An error in the departure of the local defense was well taken advantage of by the Uruguayan Terans, who with a spectacular pirouette beat goalkeeper Kevin Dawson after a qualification by Guilherme Bissoli and made it 0-1.

Driven by the goal, the team that tonight was led by Bruno Lazaroni in the absence of suspension by Paulo Autuori turned to attack.

There, the counterattack with long balls for Terans and Nikao was their main weapon, well countered by the local defense.

On the other side, Walter Gargano began to manage the threads of his team and with good touches of the ball he complicated a defense that cut the game with many fouls.

In the second half, the former Napoli midfielder lowered his performance and was replaced by Argentine Nicolás Gaitán.

About 22 minutes, when the premises did not generate higher risk situations, their young promises came together and achieved the tie with a great play.

From the left sector, Facundo Torres served the ball to Álvarez Martínez, who beat goalkeeper Santos and scored his tenth goal in the cup. Without more risky situations, the first part went with a 1-1 draw.

In the second half, Peñarol started better and generated the clearest on the right thanks to the good circuit put together by Giovanni González and Agustín Canobbio.

Carlos Rodríguez and Álvarez Martínez at different times were able to score with a header, however, the one who finally converted was the Paranaense.

In the 75th minute, after a corner kick, Pedro Rocha captured a punt and left Dawson out of options with a powerful shot from outside the area.

Peñarol tried to react and approached on several occasions, but the good responses of goalkeeper Santos and central Thiago Heleno prevented the tie.

In this way, the Paranaense took the victory and took an important step towards the final, taking into account that next week they will close the series playing at home.
