Three months after Chelsea snatched their European glory, Manchester City avenged that defeat with a Premier League victory (0-1) that allowed them to stick to the top of the table.
After three consecutive defeats against the ‘Blues’, City stormed Stamford Bridge with a goal from Gabriel Jesús on the day that Guardiola became the most victorious manager in the English club’s history.
Manchester City, with the vivid memory of Porto, because the fans ‘Blue’ did not stop repeating it, appeared at Stamford Bridge as the best team. With a positional dominance and a pressure that suffocated Chelsea and did not let him do anything with the ball.
The only thing left for Tuchel’s men was to send long balls to Timo Werner’s back so that he could deal with the City center-backs, who had little problem scaring him away, while Lukaku went completely unnoticed.
But like so many other times, the possession of City was inert. Not a shot on goal in 45 minutes produced those of Pep Guardiola, who began to press more as the break approached, with distant attempts by Rodri, Kevin de Bruyne and Gabriel Jesús, who had the clearest in a center that he pocketed with the chest and finished on the half turn very deviated.
The Brazilian was Guardiola’s bet, because he decided to stick him to a band, giving him constant instructions, instead of moving him to the position of ‘nine’. City had other purer options for the lime line, such as Ferran Torres, Raheem Sterling and Riyad Mahrez, but Guardiola opted for Gabriel Jesús.
And although the first 45 minutes could prove him wrong, the bet ended up paying. A few minutes into the second half, Joao Cancelo tried his luck from outside the area, the dense defense ‘Blue’ blocked, but the leather fell to Gabriel Jesús.
Up to three players had the Brazilian on top of him, who, to make matters worse, had his back turned to the goal. His dance began. He showed the right flank exit to Rudiger, faked, turned to the left and unleashed a shot that bit into Jorginho and slipped past Mendy’s useless gaze.
Chelsea left him with the goal, so much so that Gabriel Jesús rounded the second in a low center that left him with Mendy already beaten. But, without a goalkeeper, Thiago Silva took the double from the Brazilian on the goal line.
Not even with the result against, Chelsea disarmed City, who was able to extend the lead in a heads-up that Mendy saved Grealish, but ended up being satisfied with the 0-1.
City, who were in danger of falling six points behind Chelsea with a defeat today, climbed to third place with 13 points, the same as those of Tuchel and Liverpool, who have one game less.
