Heading into a new season, Chiefs announced the Return from Warren gatland to the New Zealand institution. The former coach of the Maori team will occupy the role of Rugby Director, meanwhile Clayton McMillan was confirmed as the head coach of the team.
Mike Collins, Chiefs CEOsaid: “Gatty’s (Gatland) experience and knowledge of provincial, super and international rugby means that he is in a unique position to help Clayton (McMillan) develop as a head coach.”
In turn, he added that “Clayton (McMillan) demonstrated this year both in the Gallagher Chiefs in Super Rugby Aotearoa and with the Maori All Blacks that he is ready to progress and this structure allows us to have the best of both coaches.”
Finally, regarding his return to the ocean team, the British & Irish Lions coach on his last tour of South Africa said: “Nobody was prouder than me with what the Chiefs achieved in 2021. It was extraordinary to see the guys and the group grow and achieve success and that includes Clayton (McMillan), who brought his vision to his role as head coach. I am excited to work with Clayton and the other coaches to build on those foundations as we seek success in the new Super Rugby Pacific in 2022. “
