Argentina and Portugal, two old acquaintances, define the Futsal World Cup

Argentina and Portugal will meet for the third time in a Futsal World Cup and for the first time in a final, since for the Portuguese team it is their first time as a finalist, while Argentina has just been champion in Colombia 2016.

The Argentine Futsal National Team defeated Brazil 2-1 in the semifinals, with a remarkable display in defense and hitting the mighty five-time champion at just the right moment.

Portugal, for its part, beat Kazakhstan 4 to 3 in definition from the penalty spot, after equaling 1 to 1 in regulation time (Kazakhstan tied with 50 seconds to go) and 2 to 2 in extra time (Portugal equalized in the absence of 75 seconds).

But this will not be the first time they meet in a World Cup event. In Taiwan 2004 was the first time that the Argentines and the Portuguese were going to collide.

They shared Group D there with Iran and Cuba. Both defeated the other two group rivals and in the clash that decided the winner of the zone, Argentina won 1-0 with a goal from a true star, Esteban “Yony” González.

Argentina would reach the semifinals in Taiwan, achieving what would be the best performance in a World Cup there, although in the final phase they fell in the semis with Italy and with Brazil in the fight for the bronze medal.

The second antecedent is much closerHe is “barely” five years old and was the semifinal of the previous World Cup, in Colombia. Argentina came down in the bets, however they played a tremendous game, perhaps their best production in the entire tournament and erased Portugal, which came to Colombia as a candidate and with its main figure, Ricardinho, as the best player in the world.

That day Titi Borruto opened the account with a beautiful goal that included the Baby archer brim hat (both will be face to face again this Sunday). Then Damián Stazzone, Alamiro Vaporaki, Alan Brandi and Leandro Cuzzolino joined, to complete a bulky 5 to 2, much more suffered than what the figure indicates and that enabled him to pass to the final, where he would meet Russia, whom he would also defeat me, to lift the Cup for the first time.

And what can you expect from this crash?

In principle, the first thing that stands out is the parity between the teams. Neither of them arrived as a great favorite to play this decisive duel, however, each one eliminated one of the favorites on the way to be on the court on Sunday. Portugal once again submitted Spain, as it did in the final of the last European (that time, it was also in overtime) and Argentina to Brazil, as in the final of the South American qualifier.

Undoubtedly futsal continues to grow and with that growth the scrolls of history are fading. The chair, then, will have to relearn some concepts to evaluate the next continental tournaments in the preview.

Portugal and Argentina are quite similar. The Portuguese have a young crack pivot Zicky Té who is called to be a sports megastar despite his youth and who has been given the minutes so far. And a couple of veterans who bring experience, but to whom we must see how the physicist responds after the marathon of matches in Lithuania, such as the phenomenon Ricardinho or Joao Matos. Another point that should be paid attention is the performance of the Baby goalkeeper, who alternates good and bad and in a match of minimal differences such as a final, it can be detrimental.

Argentina has shown its most efficient face against Brazil, when it comes to defending. And his most forceful face against the United States and Paraguay, when attacking. Precisely, against Paraguay, he played his weakest 20 minutes in the first half and had the ability to masterfully reinvent himself in the second half.

He had many individual peaks in different matches. Goalkeeper Nicolás Sarmiento, key against Brazil and on penalties against Russia (Lucas Farach also saved one in that definition). Pablo Taborda, a last reliable and temperamental man, Maxi Rescia, is perhaps the most complete player that has shown this World Cup event and two pivots, the destabilizing talent of Ángel Claudino, of great World Cup debut, very different, that allow him variety in the quality of the Argentine attack: Alan Brandi and Titi Borruto. But Argentina has a plus, it has shown itself as a team that exceeds the sum of its individualities, and that when it comes to definitions, weighs.

Without a clear favorite, Argentina will go out this Sunday at als 14, to defend its world champion crown. Facing Portugal, you will want to make your own big story.
