Diagonals Guru: The greatest attributes cannot always be measured and Dak Prescott is a clear example

MIAMI – We all dream of ever winning the lottery and while dreaming with my wife about what we would do with the eventual money, which we will probably never end up winning, the same concept always comes to me: I’d rather be the anonymous man with $ 3 million than the $ 500 million mogul who can’t even go out to eat without getting attention.

If we draw a parallel to NFL football, there are positions that are more in the spotlight than others and we can all agree that quarterback is probably the most difficult, given the responsibilities, of all American sports.

Now, there is the quarterback for the Houston Texans, with all the respect that franchise deserves, and there is the Dallas Cowboys if we choose to stay in the same state.

They say “everything is bigger in Texas,” but no job is more in the spotlight than the Cowboys’ quarterback.

We are talking about some of the most popular franchises in the world that, as if that were not enough, has a vocal owner in Jerry Jones, who is constantly in the news. If we add to that that it is a team that awakens expectations every season, often unrealistic, and that has not won a title for 26 years, you can imagine that patience is not much and responsibility is gigantic.

That is why Tony Romo, an above-average quarterback, was never valued as he should have been and was unfairly, for many years, remembered for a mishandled snap instead of all the joys he brought to Cowboys fans. .

And before any successes appear, because there are many, there are joys even when the maximum achievement is not obtained, which brings us to Dak Prescott, who for more than a season had the fans of Dallas unusually divided.

Half wanted a contract extension and the other half criticized him for demanding too much money “when it wasn’t worth it.” I imagine this latter group never had Paxton Lynch as a quarterback, or maybe they just forgot what the offense looked like with Ben DiNucci.

Today, because talking is free, you can be sure that the vast majority are grateful that the Cowboys paid Prescott. There must still be a fragment that doesn’t believe in Dak, because there are always people who have complaining as a sport.

But make no mistake, if Prescott were a free agent tomorrow, 90 percent of the league would be willing to pay him the top dollar. I redouble the bet and I am encouraged to affirm that Prescott is one of the best 10 quarterbacks in the NFL.

He might not be the quarterback with the best attributes or the ones that impress you the most, but you’re going to have a hard time finding something that Prescott does wrong. You can possibly count on one hand on quarterbacks who attack vertically, limit errors and lead men, and Prescott is exactly that.

To test the verticality, which has been accentuated more with Kellen Moore as offensive coordinator, I tell you that from 2019 until this weekend (I understand that he was injured the bulk of 2020), Prescott has been the most accurate quarterback in the NFL in passing more than 20 yards in the air; even more than Aaron Rodgers, who is known for that facet and has just won the MVP.

I think the same, that his greatest attribute is his leadership ability and although he is always away from the drama despite representing a franchise that seems to be married to him, I prefer to share with you again the story that his former coach at Mississippi State has told a thousand times.

They had hosted several prospects on campus that year, including four quarterbacks, including Prescott. He had them throw the ball and Mullen was not very impressed with what Dak did, which was reflected in his words: “The mechanics were a bit long and did not seem fugitive, so I asked him to work on certain aspects of his delivery” .

The physical trainer then took all the prospects to the gym and after 10 minutes he came back and said to Mullen, “You have to offer this boy a scholarship now.” He was referring to Prescott, who in just under 10 minutes had managed to get all of his teammates, whom he had met that day, to follow him in their routine and became the most respected man in the gym in the blink of an eye.

Prescott received his scholarship, worked, and got better at what Mullen asked him to do. He had Mississippe State as the best team in the nation for a few weeks until he was chosen in the fourth round of the 2016 draft.

His measurables still failed to impress scouts, who never realized that his greatest attributes as a player cannot be measured.

We speed up the clock to 2021 and Prescott’s evolution has been unquestionable, while maintaining his incredible qualities as a leader. Now he leads one of the most prolific offenses in the NFL and considering that Washington has been a disappointment thus far, the Cowboys are candidates to win their division and, perhaps, even make a little noise in the postseason.

Dak Prescott never had the option to be the low-profile $ 3 million man in the NFL, but with all the attention and drama around him, he always handled himself with incredible professionalism.

His level this young season has once again been superlative and those who still refuse to call him an elite quarterback are simply here to prove their point rather than accept the reality that has been punching them in the face for a while. .

Prescott is elite and although I didn’t think he would say this this year, the Cowboys are dangerous, just as much as their quarterback, who for some reason that I can hardly understand is still underrated.

* Home teams are second

As I always say, it is never good to play every game. In other words, there are some that are best missed. Therefore, I decided to add this section, to publicize my six favorite teams with a bet line. Opinions are welcome, since the idea is to add an attribute that is beneficial to readers. The order of the teams is not accidental and the predictions do not affect the total statistics.

There are many of us who are in this type of competition. In this case, the bet line does not matter. Just do not repeat any equipment throughout each week. Of course, these forecasts will not affect the overall statistics either. In parentheses, the teams chosen so far.

At the request of many, we add the landline with a line from Week 11 of 2013.

I have always said that I am not a fan of teasers, since they come from the word tempt and are called “sucker bets”, but, at the request of several of the readers, we added this section. Here, as there are three teams, the line is modified by 6 points, but you must hit all three to collect. Below, I name the three teams with the altered lines in parentheses.

1-BUFFALO BILLS (+9 and a half)

2-SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS (+11 and a half)

3-CINCINNATI BENGALS (+9 and a half)

At the request of several of the readers, we include an entry and exit match for each week.

1-HIGHS OF CARDINALS-RAMS (53 and a half)

2-LOW SEAHAWKS-49ERS (52 and a half)

Total statistics (With + Without + Teaser + Additions and Discharges): 70-34

With Bet Line: 40-24 (9-7)

Without Bet Line: 45-19 (11-5)

Surprise of the Week (no line): 4-0 (1-0)

Fixed of the Week (no line): 4-0 (1-0)

Fixed of the Week (with line): 4-0 (1-0)

Power 6 (with line): 16-8 (4-2)

Teaser 3: 2-2 (0-1)

Ups and downs: 5-3 (2-0)

Suicide Pool (no line): 4-0 (SF, CLE, DEN, BUF)
