With Garoppolo injured, Trey Lance is shaping up for his first Niners start

Kyle Shanahan clarifies that there is no battle for the starting QB position in the 49ers between Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance

Lance, who will turn 21 years and 154 days Sunday, will become the fourth-youngest quarterback to start a game in the NFL.

SANTA CLARA, California – San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Trey Lance was thrown onto the field last week at halftime. This week, there is not so much uncertainty.

Lance will start an NFL game for the first time on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals 4-0, the Niners coach said Friday, Kyle shanahan. This announcement occurs after a week in which Throw He took over with the starting offense, as starter Jimmy Garoppolo injured his right calf.

Garoppolo appears on Friday’s injury report after not practicing all week. The 49ers could also be without tight end George Kittle, who is listed as doubtful with a calf injury.

Which means Lance, the No. 3 overall pick in this year’s NFL draft, would start without the Niners’ star tight end and veteran Nate Sudfeld serving as Lance’s backup after being promoted from the practice team.

“I’m excited, but I’m not going to make it bigger than it is,” he said. Trey lance. “I was hoping Jimmy was healthy, but he has done an amazing job and he and Nate have helped me a lot this week and (quarterback coach) Rich (Scangarello) and coach Shanahan as well. So, I’m excited for the opportunity. “.

Lance, who Turning 21 years and 154 days on Sunday, he will become the fourth-youngest quarterback to start a game in the NFL. He will also attempt to be the second quarterback (joining Phil Simms in 1979) selected in the first round to win his first start against a team that is 4-0 or better.

While this will be Lance’s first start, he is coming off his first overtime. Replaced Garoppolo at halftime of last week’s loss to the Seattle Seahawks and learned he was coming into the game moments before the third quarter began. After some shaky first moments, he calmed down a bit in a performance that Shanahan noted had “some good and some bad.”

Lance finished that game 9 of 18 for 157 yards with two touchdowns and rushed seven times for 41 yards. Having the full week of practice with the starters not only allowed Lance to feel more comfortable, but it also gave the 49ers a chance to develop a game plan with more specific plays for Lance.

Still, it is difficult for anyone to predict what the first start of Trey lance.

“I’m excited to see him play,” agreed Shanahan. “I know he has the ability to do a lot of things, but it will be the first time I’ve played the whole game. I’m excited to see him play, but I go in expecting nothing. I try to prepare a boy the best possible from our point of view. I know him He has done his part preparing and when Sunday comes around that is generally the place where you have fun and relax and live with the results ”.

On Wednesday Garoppolo He was hoping to play the Cardinals, but acknowledged that he would be “fighting” the calf injury instead of being completely healthy.

That was an important distinction given that Garoppolo He tried to come back too quickly from a sprained ankle in last year’s Week 5 loss to the Miami Dolphins. Garoppolo, clearly limping, was 7 of 17 for 77 yards scoreless and two interceptions before coming to the bench in that 43-17 loss.

As of Friday morning, the Niners and Garoppolo had hoped that he would participate in practice in some way. But after some preliminary tests it became clear that Garoppolo would not be able to try.

“Someone has to protect them from themselves,” Shanahan said. “(He) tried to warm up and get ready to play. He wasn’t reacting in the right way, so we have to make the smartest decision.”

However, Garoppolo will have additional recovery time for this injury, and the Niners are heading into Week 6 off. The hope is that he can be healthy for the Oct. 24 game against the Indianapolis Colts.

Garoppolo said Wednesday that while he was looking forward to playing this week, he was also spending time helping Throw to prepare when possible.

“It’s kind of a balancing act,” Garoppolo said. “If Trey has any questions, anything that I have done in the past or that he has not done, I will help in some way with that.”
