GLENDALE (AP) – The Arizona Cardinals improved to 5-0 for the first time since 1974, with a stellar performance from their defense to beat the San Francisco 49ers 17-10 on Sunday.
DeAndre Hopkins had a difficult nine-yard touchdown reception with 5:13 to play, holding on to the ball despite having Josh Norman on top. That action gave the Cardinals a 17-7 lead, enough cushion to close the game with a victory.
Kyler Murray completed 22 of 31 passes for 239 yards. Hopkins caught six of them for 87 yards.
49ers rookie quarterback Trey Lance had a bumpy game in his first start as a starter, making impressive plays through the air and on the ground. But San Francisco’s offense struggled at key moments, converting one of five chances to fourth.
Lance finished 15 of 29 for 192 yards and an interception. In addition, he was the leader of San Francisco’s rushing offense (2-3) with 89 yards.
Arizona (5-0) is the only undefeated team in the NFL.
