Discussions about a possible return of all-star point guard Ben Simmons to the Philadelphia 76ers have picked up momentum, and he could join the team as soon as this week, sources told ESPN on Monday.
Sixers management and coach Doc Rivers made progress in talks over the weekend with Simmons’ agent, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul, on a resolution for Simmons to return, the sources added.
Simmons could soon speak directly to team officials, something he hasn’t done since a meeting in late August in Los Angeles when he reiterated his desire to be traded.
The Sixers have looked to trade in the league this offseason, but haven’t been able to find a deal that would return them to the kind of comparable star they’d like to continue to build. Those talks would likely continue with a return of Simmons, but Sixers president Daryl Morey and Rivers hope to continue working to convince the Australian to stay long-term with the franchise, sources said.
Simmons will have lost $ 1 million in salary once he is out of Monday’s game against the Brooklyn Nets.
