Leonardo Mayer will be honored in Buenos Aires

With the start of the classification on Sunday, the Challenger of Buenos Aires. And it will be the first tournament in Argentina with ATP points since the official retirement of Leonardo Mayer.

Although he was present in the Davis Cup series against Belarus, the man from Corrientes, who raised the Silver Salad Bowl in 2016, later announced his retirement from professionalism for which, now, he will have his recognition.

“We are in contact with him, we want to honor him. He is so humble that he called me to ask if he can come to the tournament. He does not realize that he is one of the greats of Argentine tennis ”. Those were the words of Mariano Ink, director of the Challenger of Buenos Aires 2021, in the presentation of the tournament on Friday.

Due to his career, during the tennis week he will then be recognized with plaques by the tournament organization and also by authorities of the Argentine Tennis Association.

It should be remembered that the man from Corrientes was 21st in the ATP ranking in 2015 and one of the most influential protagonists in Argentina’s historic conquest of the Davis Cup in 2016. In addition, he played the longest singles match in Davis Cup history: in 2015, after 6 hours and 43 minutes, against Joao Souza, from Brazil, with a 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5), 5-7, 5-7 and 15-13 victory.

The Yacaré achievement two ATP titles in singles (Hamburg 2014 and 2017) and played three other finals (Viña del Mar 2014, Nice 2015 and Hamburg 2018) and reached the round of 16 at Wimbledon (2014) and Roland Garros (2019). In addition, he was 2nd in the junior world in 2005 (winning the category doubles at Roland Garros together with Emiliano Massa).
