Sammy Watkins will not play the Chargers; Rashod Bateman ready for Sunday

Watkins, the team’s third wide receiver, will be replaced by rookie Bateman.

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – There will be a change in the receiving corps for quarterback Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens heading into the home game against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.

Sammy Watkins has been ruled out due to a hamstring injury and it will probably be rreplaced by first-round draft pick Rashod Bateman, who will debut in the NFL.

Watkins, the third leading receiver for the Ravens, was injured in the first half of Monday’s 31-25 overtime victory over the Indianapolis Colts. He did not practice all week.

There is no schedule for the return of Watkins, who has struggled with injuries throughout his career – he has missed 26 games in the past six seasons.

“He could come back next week. He could come back until Week 8,” coach John Harbaugh said. “It depends on how fast the hamstring heals.”

With Watkins out, Harbaugh is confident he would “probably expect” Bateman to play. Bateman, the 27th overall pick, has been out of the game for the first five games after breaking his right groin on Aug. 10. Bateman has been practicing for three weeks.

“I don’t think we will throw it into the fire every play; I think we will put it in the plan from week to week,” Ravens offensive coordinator Greg Roman illustrated. “Rashod is going to have a long and fruitful career, and this is just the first step.”

Lamar Jackson will also play Sunday after missing practice Thursday due to illness.

“Everything is fine,” Harbaugh stressed, adding that there are no lingering effects on Jackson.
