Legends of El Clásico: The 22 players with the most appearances in Barcelona and Real Madrid

BARCELONA – If an ideal line-up of Barcelona and Real Madrid could be made, with all the footballers who throughout history played for both teams, more than two superb teams would appear. But if only the longest-lived in terms of belonging are considered, stars such as Ronaldo, Cristiano Ronaldo, Maradona, Cruyff, Ronaldinho, Kubala or Di Stéfano are left out of the chosen ones …

But, equally, those two lineups that could face each other in a head-to-head duel would be superb.

Barcelona would form with Víctor Valdés in goal, with a defense made up of Puyol, Migueli, Piqué and Segarra; Busquets, Xavi and Amor would play in the center of the field and with Messi as a false ‘9’ Rexach and Iniesta would accompany him in attack.

Real Madrid would have Iker Casillas under the sticks; Sergio Ramos, Hierro, Sanchís and Camacho would be the defenders; Pirri, Michel and Guti would be in the center and Raúl, Santillana and Gento would form the attacking hat-trick.

Of the 22 protagonists, only Sergio Ramos, Iniesta, Messi, Piqué and Busquets remain active, the last two being the only ones who play in one of the two teams, in this case Barcelona. Benzema, the ninth player with the most games played for Real Madrid (571), would be left out of this lineup because as a forward he has fewer appearances than Raúl, Santillana and Gento.

The 11 players of Barcelona add up to a total of 245 trophies (regional ones not included) for 197 Madridistas, who, however, accumulate 6,936 games for their team for 6,389 for the Catalans.
