Pitcher Max Fried is 'fried' for the Atlanta Braves

HOUSTON – Max Fried is fried. At least that’s how he looked in his last two outings in the current major league postseason.

The Atlanta Braves star left-hander allowed seven hits and six runs (five earned) in five innings against the Houston Astros in Game 2 of the World Series on Wednesday.

Fried, who had a 3.04 ERA and only allowed four or more runs five times in 28 starts in the regular season, has allowed 11 laps (10 earned) in his last two playoff appearances.

Fried was the pitcher defeated in Game 5 of the National League Championship Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers on October 21, at Dodger Stadium, when he was attacked with eight hits and five laps in 4.2 innings. On that occasion they hit two home runs.

On Wednesday at Minute Maid Park, he was just hit an extra base, a double by Venezuelan second baseman Jose Altuve starting the game, and he had six strikeouts and a walk. In all, the Braves “Ace” has had 15 hits and 11 runs in 9.2 innings in his two most recent assignments.

It’s the third time in his five-year career, whether in the regular series or the postseason, that Fried has been scored 10 or more runs in a two-start stretch.

Tiredness? It’s possible. With 21.2 innings in the postseason, Fried raised his total for the year to 187.1 innings, the most of his career in a season.

With right-hander Charlie Morton out for the remainder of the World Series with a fractured fibula he sustained in Game 1 on Tuesday, Atlanta needs Fried and right-hander Ian Anderson, its only other two regular starters, to take the lead necessary to have greater chances of winning their first championship since 1995.

Going into the second game of the fall classic, Atlanta’s bullpen had worked more innings (49.2) than the starting staff (46.1) in the postseason.
