Astros not only look at bat, on defense they are also five stars

ATLANTA – One of the best ways to win baseball games at all levels, including the Major Leagues, is batting and fielding.

And that’s why the Houston Astros are in their third World Series in five years, after contesting the American League title for the fifth time in a row.

Five Astros players are nominated to win the American League Gold Glove, which is awarded to the best defensive players at each position.

Just a week ago, five Houston players were named finalists for the Silver Bat, which is given to the best hitters at each position.

Astros pitcher Zack Greinke tops the list of Golden Glove nominated pitchers, Major League Baseball reported Thursday; followed by catcher Martin Maldonado, first baseman Yuli Gurriel, shortstop Carlos Correa and outfielder Kyle Tucker.

“This team prides itself on playing good defense,” said Gurriel, whose brother Lourdes Gurriel Jr., outfielder for the Toronto Blue Jays was also nominated.

“You can have the best bats on the planet and the best pitchers, but if you don’t do things right on the other side, everything else will be useless,” Gurriel stressed.

For the Atlanta Braves, who play the Astros in the World Series, pitcher Max Fried, first baseman Freddie Freeman, second baseman Ozzie Albies and outfielder Adam Duvall are considered for the final vote.
