CONMEBOL confirmed the 2022 South American women's calendar

The Directorate of Competitions and Operations of CONMEBOL announced this Wednesday the dates of the women’s national team tournaments that will be played in 2022, and whose venues will be Uruguay, Chile and Colombia.

The first continental championship to be played next year will be the U-17 contest, which will take place from Tuesday 1st to Saturday 19th March in Uruguay and that will grant three places for the World Cup in India 2022. This will be the third tournament for women’s teams to be organized in Uruguay, where the South American U-20 in 2014 and the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2018 were previously played.

At the same time, The South American U-20 will take place from April 6 to 25 in Chile. This contest will award two places to the U-20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica.

And finally, It was confirmed that the Copa América, the most prestigious continental women’s soccer event, will be held in Colombia from Friday, July 8 to Saturday, July 30.

This senior team tournament will determine the three teams that qualify directly to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. In addition, there will be two places available for the intercontinental playoffs for a place in said World Cup, and three places for the Pan American Games in Santiago de Chile 2023.

It should be remembered that the two youth tournaments were to be played in 2020, but had to be canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic; even the South American sub 20 came to play its initial phase in Argentina in March last year but was interrupted and suspended.

Brazil is the current champion in the three categories: in the Copa América it has won the last three editions in 2010, 2014 and 2018, at the sub-20 level it has won the South American eight that have been played throughout history (2004, 2006 , 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2018), and in the under 17 category he won the last tournament played in Argentina in 2018.
