Sergi Barjuan will be Barça's interim coach until Xavi arrives

BARCELONA – Sergi Barjuan, a former footballer who emerged from the Barça youth squad and who between 1993 and 2002 played 386 games with the first team as a left back, was announced this Thursday by Barcelona as provisional coach until the signing of the final coach is finalized. Xavi Hernández, and during the time that he will leave his duties at the head of the subsidiary team.

As long as the incorporation of the new coach is not closed, the former side of Johan Cruyff’s Dream Team, who began his career on the benches directing the Barça youth team, will be in charge of the first team, which he already trained this Thursday at the afternoon training at the Ciudad Deportiva and will lead in Saturday’s game at the Camp Nou against Alavés.

His stay on the first team bench has not yet been finalized and will depend on the negotiations between the Barça club and Al-Sadd to free Xavi Hernández from his contract with the Qatari club.

The initial intention of Barça is that Xavi already leads the team from Sunday and sits on the bench the following Tuesday in Ukraine, in the fundamental Champions League match that the team must play against Dynamo Kiev. If an agreement is not reached, Sergi would be the coach in Kiev.

Sergi’s name was on the table from the moment the dismissal of Ronald Koeman became official, being the preferred candidate for Joan Laporta, who imposed his thesis at the option of Albert Capellas, coordinator at the club’s academy, to whom He returned this summer after leading Denmark’s under-21 team.

Capellas, who was Jordi Cruyff’s assistant during his time as coach in China, was the bet of the sports advisor, although the promotion, albeit temporarily, of the Barça B coach was finally understood more logically.

Sergi, 50, also returned to Barcelona this summer to replace Javier García Pimienta as director of the subsidiary, after a career on the benches that began in the youth club in 2009 and later led him to direct Recreativo de Huelva , Almería, Mallorca and Hangzhou Greentown in China, from which it was separated in July 2019.
