Alexander Zverev (4th in the world) defeated Frances Tiafoe (49th) 7-5 and 6-4 to become ATP 500 Vienna champion. It is the fifth title of the season for the German, in his best season so far.
The 24-year-old German had won the ATP titles of Acapulco 500 (beating Tsitsipas), Masters 1000 of Madrid (against Berrettini), Masters 1000 of Cincinnati (against Rublev) and the Olympic Games (against Khachanov). In addition, he was a semifinalist in two Grand Slam: US Open and Roland Garros. He has 52 victories and just 13 defeats.
In 2017, Zverev had also won 5 titles albeit on a smaller scale: Montpellier (250), Munich (250), Washington (500) and the Masters 1000 in Rome and Canada. That season ended with 57 victories and 22 defeats and became 3rd in the world.
With Vienna, Zverev reached 18 titles in his career and faces the end of the season (Paris and ATP Finals) as one of the great candidates. It is 4th in the ranking, 800 points behind Tsitsipas.
