With the Super Rugby Aotearoa 2022 in its sights, Blues reinforced its coaching staff with the aim of repeating the title achieved this season.

One of them is the New Zealander Joe schmidt, who will play the role of assistant coach of head coach Leon MacDonald, and the other will be Craig McGrath, who will take the reins in the aspect defensive of the team replacing Tana Umaga.

Schmidt has an outstanding career, in which his steps stand out for Clermont and Leinster at the club level. With the French team he was champion of the Top 14, while with the Irish he won the Heineken Cup twice and the Challenge Cup and Pro 12 before going on in 2013 to direct the selected from that country. With El Trébol, he reached the quarterfinals of the 2015 and 2019 World Cups.

In turn, it is worth noting that the New Zealander already had a stint in the blues. The same was between 2005 and 2007, in which he also held the role of assistant coach.

On McGrath’s side, it comes from the Auckland Bunnings, National Provincial Championship team, where he was also defense coach. In addition, he was previously part of the staff of Melbourne rebels for four years and of the Honda HEAT Japanese other three.
