The player from La Plata, eighth seeded of the tournament in Ecuador, defeated his compatriot without problems, second favorite, nine years older than the winner and with a much longer run on the professional circuit.

Bagnis, 31, reached his only ATP-level final this season, in Santiago, Chile, while Etcheverry has been adding and climbing through his performances in the Challengers.

With this task in Guayaquil, Etcheverry reached 10 semifinals in Challengers in 2021, with two titles included, and his rival on Saturday will be the Dutch Jesper De Jong (232 °), who beat Colombian Daniel Galán (102 °), third seeded , by 6-2, 6-7 (5) and 6-3.

In the upper half of the table, the Chilean Alejandro Tabilo (169 °) faces the Portuguese Goncalo Oliveira (298 °) in the quarterfinals, while the Argentine Nicolás Kicker (240 °) is measured with the Brazilian Thiago Seyboth Wild (132 °), sixth seeded.
