It was not another triumph, far from it. You might think that another success against a Top 10 pair is always important and this one by Alexander Zverev against Casper Ruud was very valuable, as the German tied the record for victories held by Stefanos Tsitsipas in 2021, with 55.
With a great season, Tsitsipas, current No. 3 in the world, had the top mark and has a good advantage, but he was staying in the last section and thus Zverev, No. 4 ATP, was discounting and crossing out on the list until he equaled this Friday the Greek line.
This week, at the Masters 1000 in Paris-Bercy, indoors, Zverev beat the Serbian Dusan Lajovic, the Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov and now the Norwegian Casper Ruud by 7-5 and 6-4 and thus jumped from 52 to 55 wins in this season, the highest record.
Olympic champion in Tokyo, Zverev is undoubtedly one of the best tennis players of the year. And he makes up the current batch of the four best on the circuit, behind Serbian Novak Djokovic, champion in three of the four Grand Slam, Russian Daniil Medvedev, owner of the remaining Major, the US Open, and the aforementioned Tsitsipas.
On Saturday, Zverev will seek to beat Medvedev in the second semifinal in Paris and thus surpass the Greek reaching 56 successes in 2021. It will not be an easy game, it is clear, but the challenge is compelling for the German, who is with a lot of confidence and it shows at every step.
