Tabilo showed off and was champion of the Guayaquil Challenger

From end to end and without giving up a set throughout the tournament. Chilean Alejandro Tabilo, at the age of 24, was crowned champion of the Guayaquil Challenger, in brick dust by beating Dutch Jesper De Jong 6-1, 7-5 in the final and achieved his first title of that level.

Tabilo knew that the table of the Ecuadorian contest was going to be complicated, since he had to make his debut against the rising Spanish Jaume Munar, the top favorite. But he eliminated him in two sets and from then on he was unstoppable, to the point of winning the 10 sets he played all week.

In one hour 20 minutes of play, Tabilo took revenge against the European, with whom he lost last year on that same court. The Chilean started the final with great confidence, maintaining consistency and focus on his game. He stayed up on the scoreboard during the first set, until he finally won it. In the second set, De Jong recovered and seemed to be forcing a third set, but it did not reach him.

“He was focused from the beginning. After that match (with Munar) I continued with the same mentality and I am happy to have been able to continue at this level, “said Tabilo, after winning the final match and revealed his strategy to get the title.

“We saw it a lot with my coach, we planned an almost perfect strategy, we had to be very aggressive, close the net a lot. Having started very solid I think that it helped a lot and more than anything the confidence and being brave ”, he pointed out.

The player born in Toronto, but with Chilean nationality, arrived in Guayaquil with a low profile, but initially shook the board by defeating Munar. The left-hander arrived in Ecuador being No. 169 in the world and climbed 29 places thanks to his title to reach 140 °.

Thus, Tabilo passed in the ATP ranking to Tomás Barrios, now 141 °, and Nicolás Jarry, today No. 165, to become No. 2 in tennis in Chile. The leader continues to be, by a wide margin, Cristian Garin, who continues in the world Top 20, now being 17th in the ranking.
