UFC 268: Ecuadorian Marlon 'Chito' Vera knocks out Frankie Edgar with brutal front kick

Ecuadorian Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera knocked out veteran Frankie Edgar with a brutal front kick as part of the UFC 268 main card.

It was a significant knockout for Vera (18-7-1, 12-6 UFC), who achieved the biggest victory of her career. Vera now has the most stoppages in the history of the men’s bantamweight division with nine; it was just the eighth knockout by front kick in UFC history.

Each man won a round for the most part, and the final session was unfolding in a way that suggested that, with just over a minute to go, it was anybody’s fight. Vera lurked, but Edgar landed more and caused his opponent to miss. Until Vera did not fail.

A front kick from Vera landed on the chin and knocked Edgar down against the mat, putting an impressive end to the fight at 3:50 of the third round.

Vera, a 28-year-old Ecuadorian who fights in Irvine, California, won two in a row and eight of his last ten. He was knocked down in each of the first two rounds, but after absorbing a few hits while on his back in the first, he quickly got the fight back on its feet in the second round and began to do his own damage.

Edgar (23-10-1, 18-10-1 UFC, 40, the former lightweight champion and three-time featherweight title challenger, has lost two fights in a row and four of his last five.

Vera entered the fight as number 13 in the UFC rankings, while Edgar is in eighth place.
