Jorge Masvidal to miss Leon Edwards at UFC 269 through injury: Chimaev?

Next month’s highly anticipated welterweight fight between Jorge Masvidal and Leon Edwards has been called off, UFC chief commercial officer Hunter Campbell told ESPN on Wednesday.

According to Campbell, Masvidal (35-15) was forced to withdraw from the fight of UFC 269 on December 11 due to an undisclosed injury. There were no updates on whether Edwards (19-3) will remain on the card or if the matchup will be rescheduled. Campbell did not specify a timeframe for Masvidal’s return. Khamzat Chimaev assured that he would be available to face the British.

The welterweight fight was possibly going to be the highest-profile fight on the Las Vegas undercard. Masvidal and Edwards were involved in a backstage altercation in March 2019, when Masvidal punched Edwards in the face.

Masvidal is coming off back-to-back losses to defending champion Kamaru Usman in title fights. England’s Edwards is still looking for his first shot at the UFC title. He’s on a nine-game winning streak.

A lightweight title fight between Charles Oliveira and Dustin Poirier is set to headline UFC 269’s pay-per-view.
