Max Holloway defeats Yair Rodríguez by unanimous decision and is placed in turn for a shot at the UFC featherweight title

LAS VEGAS – Max Holloway defeated Mexico’s Yair Rodríguez by unanimous decision in the main event of UFC Fight Night, cementing his position as the number one challenger to the featherweight title.

For Holloway (23-6), the former 145-pound champion who lost the 2019 title to Alexander Volkanovski and failed to win it back in a close rematch in 2020, 2021 marked the first calendar year since 2015 in which he did not compete in a UFC championship fight. But this victory would surely leave him in turn for that in 2022.

Holloway was coming off a masterful performance in a unanimous decision win over Calvin Kattar in January. Holloway is tied for ninth in ESPN’s men’s pound-for-pound top 10.

Rodríguez (14-3, 1 NC) had not fought since October 2019. Holloway represented the greatest test of his career and an opportunity to live up to the potential he has shown since 2014, when he won The Ultimate Fighter Latin America.
