Tommy Paul (52nd in the world rankings) defeated Denis Shapovalov (18th) by 6-4, 2-6 and 6-4, after two hours and 12 minutes, in the final of the ATP 250 in Stockholm. In this way, the American, in the first final he played, achieved his first professional title.
After establishing himself in the capital of Sweden, the 24-year-old tennis player will be ranked number 43 in the world, this being the best position of his career. Shapovalov, meanwhile, will climb four places and will be 14th ATP.
Paul had an incredible tournament: before he beat Shapo in the definition, he had left Taylor Fritz (23rd) on the way, in the first round, Andy Murray (143th) and Frances Tiafoe (41st).
The 22-year-old Canadian fell again in a final and could not repeat his consecration in Stockholm: in this tournament, in 2019, he won – so far – his only ATP trophy. Denis lost the finals of the Masters 1000 of Paris 2019 (vs. Novak Djokovic), ATP 250 of Geneva 2021 (vs. Casper Ruud) and in this one against Paul.
