Rugby Australia and New Zealand Rugby communicated the full schedule for the Super Rugby Pacific 2022. With a new format of 12 teams, the tournament will feature the five Australian teams and the five traditional New Zealanders, while they will be joined by Fijian Drua and Moana Pasifika.
The contest will last a total of 18 weeks, kicking off on February 18, while the final match will be played on June 18. Each team will play 14 games per regular season, each having seven home games and a free week on date 7, 8 or 9. The top eight teams in the regular season table will qualify for the final playoffs.
Moana Pasifika will debut in the Super Rugby Pacific against Brumbies on Friday February 18 in Auckland. Also, the season starts in Australia the same night when Waratahs receive to Hurricanes in Sydney. Secondly, Fijian Drua will play his first game against Blues as a visitor on Saturday February 19.
The first round will also feature matches between Crusaders, champion of Super Rugby Aotearoa 2021 and that will have the Argentine in his squad Pablo Matera, and Highlanders at the Orangetheory Stadium in Christchurch, and Western force in view of Rebels at HBF Park in Perth.
The other novelty of the contest is that in the second date will have a ‘Super Round’ which will be played entirely in Melbourne between Friday 25 and Sunday 27 February.
In 2022, due to ongoing pandemic issues, Fijian Drua will play a limited number of matches in Fiji and will be based in New South Wales, while Moana Pasifika will play all of her home matches in Auckland, where she will be based. Many more games are expected to be played in the Pacific Islands in the future.
