Some surprises and other imagined triumphs occurred in the Brazilian contest. Clearly, the triumph of the Chilean against the Top 100 took all the flashes but we must also highlight the performance of the local Gustavo Heide, which before all odds, eliminated the Cordovan and recent finalist in Montevideo, with partials of 7-5, 4-6 and 6-4.
For his part, Next Gen Báez, who arrived in Brazil a few days ago after his participation in the Under 21 Masters Tournament held in Milan, started on the right foot by beating his compatriot Facundo Mena by 7-6 (0) and 6-2.
It is worth mentioning the victories of the Peruvian Nicolás Álvarez (4-6, 6-4 and 6-2 to Pedro Cachín) and the Argentine Santiago Rodríguez Taverna, who from qualifying won 6-4 and 6-3 Spanish Jaume Munar, 83rd and second favorite.
Another who had a solid performance was Francisco Cerúndolo (112th): He had no problems against Junior Klier and categorically surpassed him with partial 6-3 and 6-0. Andrea Collarini (263º), meanwhile, he defeated Pablo Cuevas (95º) 6-3 and 6-3 and will play the round of 16.
The local favorite, Thiago Monteiro, a finalist in the Challenger in Buenos Aires, also bought a ticket to the next stage after leaving the Swiss Johan Nikles on the road 6-2 and 6-1.
