Mavericks: Luka Doncic (ankle) injury is not serious

DALLAS – The left ankle injury suffered by Dallas Mavericks superstar guard Luka Doncic “is not too serious,” a source told ESPN.

Doncic is expected to be out of Wednesday’s road game against the Phoenix Suns, but the Mavs are optimistic he will not be out for an extended period, sources said.

Doncic injured his ankle with 44 seconds to go in Monday’s win over the Denver Nuggets after contesting a layup from guard Austin Rivers, who landed on Doncic’s leg.

Doncic immediately limped over to an empty bench, sitting up and clutching his left ankle before heading to the locker room. The former Real Madrid was not available to the media after the game because he was receiving treatment on his ankle.

The Mavs did not practice Tuesday before heading off for a four-game road trip with a pair of two-game sets against the Phoenix Suns and the LA Clippers.

Doncic has a history of ankle sprains. He missed a total of 11 games during the 2019-20 season due to a sprained right ankle. He played the final three games of the Mavs’ 2020 Playoff series despite a sprained left ankle.

The All-NBA first-team pick for the past two years is averaging 24.9 points, 8.3 rebounds and 7.9 assists per game for the 9-4 Mavs.
