Indians change names to Guardians on Friday

CLEVELAND – The Cleveland Indians will officially become the Guardians on Friday, completing a name change that has been happening in stages for the past few months.

The team released a statement Wednesday saying the team’s Progressive Field store will begin selling Guardian merchandise and memorabilia later this week. The store in the team’s center stadium will exclusively sell Guardians team gear before it becomes available at retail outlets in Northeast Ohio on November 23.

The team said some digital elements will change Thursday before the Cleveland team’s website and social media handle the transition on Friday.

On Tuesday, the American League franchise overcame a final hurdle in the makeover when a lawsuit brought by a local roller skating team called The Guardians was settled. The parties agreed to go ahead with both teams using Guardians.

Cleveland’s Major League Baseball team has been known as the Indians since 1915. But after years of protests and after the club dropped its controversial Chief Wahoo logo, the Indians decided to change to Guardians, a name inspired by eight huge art-deco statues on the Hope Memorial Bridge near the ballpark.
