Sebastián Muñoz is the sole leader of the RSM Classic, which takes place in Sea Island, Georgia, after the lowest round of his career on the PGA TOUR. The Colombian scored a return of 10 under par (60 strokes) at the Seaside field, one of the two fields that host this event.
Muñoz leads by a blow of difference over the Canadian Mackenzie Hughes and the Americans Scott Stallings, Zach Johnson and Chez Revie, who with (-9) share second place.
In a day with really low scores in both fields, Venezuelan Jhonatan Vegas also stood out, who opened with a round of 8 under par (64) at the Plantation Course and tied for sixth place with three other players.
Muñoz scored eight birdies and an eagle, on an error-free card that tied the Seaside field record. “I did not expect the scores to be so low. Yesterday I felt very good in the ProAm and we played in quite similar conditions, so I was confident for today and luckily it turned out well, “said the Colombian. The best result this season is a T4 in the ZOZO Championship.
“It was a very solid round. After the birdie on 3, after a great shot, I began to feel my game and the birdies on 5, 6 and 7. Luckily with Corey (Conners) we were contagious, he was 6 under par after 9 holes, so that motivated us. In 15 I was able to make an eagle and then I did not get good chances in 16 and 17, but I did in 18, so of course very happy with the round”Said the 28-year-old.
Muñoz felt very comfortable on the field and already has a good record in this tournament, as he finished 3rd in 2020. “I think my irons worked very well and the putt of less than three meters also, I had no mistakes. I gave myself many chances, always from the right places and I was able to take advantage of them by reading very well some putts that were difficult, ”said the Colombian.
For the Venezuelan Vegas this could be a rematch after having put himself last week in position to fight for the title in Houston and not being able to close in the best way. “My game is going in the right direction, I had some chances lately but maybe because of fatigue I couldn’t take advantage of them, coming back from COVID was not easy, but I think I’m on the right track.”
“You had to be aggressive today as the weather was perfect and you had to try to make a lot of birdies. I hit the ball very well and I gave myself many chances, they are those rounds that one has to enjoy since not always one can make so many birdies, “said Vegas who opened with four birdies and an eagle in his first nine holes and then added two other birdies that gave him his best round of the season.
Although the rest of the Latinos scored below par, the other four Latinos are far from the top. Chileans Joaquín Niemann and Mito Pereira both scored 67 (-3) in the Sea Side field and are 83rd. For their part, Camilo Villegas and Emiliano Grillo, with (-2) are located in a distant 106th place.
Of the 156 players, 135 scored low par today.
