Those who debuted in the ATP Finals and ... reached the semis!

Casper Ruud edged Andrey Rublev by 2-6, 7-5 and 7-6 (5) and qualified for the semifinals at the ATP Finals in Turin. Thus, became the seventh tennis player (since 2011) to be among the top four of the tournament in his debut participation.

The first to get it was Stan Wawrinka. The Swiss, in 2013, surpassed the group in second place behind Rafael Nadal and then was eliminated with partial 6-3 and 6-3 with Novak Djokovic, who would be champion after beating Roger Federer in the definition.

The following year, the Japanese Kei Nishikori continued on his way: he made his debut in the top eight competition and qualified for the first knockout round. In that instance he was defeated by “Nole”, who would later achieve the third consecutive title in London.

Debuting and being a champion is for few. AND Grigor Dimitrov accomplished that feat in 2017. With three wins (against Dominic Thiem, David Goffin and Pablo Carreño Busta), the Bulgarian got into the top four of the tournament and ran into the American Jack sock, which that same year also acceded to said round at its premiere. Finally, in the final, he met again with the Belgian and after a 7-5, 4-6 and 6-3 the label of “Maestro” was hung.

For his part, the South African Kevin Anderson advanced to the semifinals in 2018, where he was defeated by Djokovic. Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, in 2019, did the same: surpassed the group with two wins (Medvedev and Zverev) and one fall (Nadal) and then left Roger Federer in the semifinals and shout champion against Dominic Thiem.

In this way, Casper Ruud is the last to achieve that mark and will try to emulate the feats of Dimitrov and Tsitsipas. The Nordic became the first tennis player from his country to advance to the semifinals at the ATP Finals and will rival Daniil Medvedev.
