Marcell Ozuna shoots first homer with Giants in Dominican, in triumph over Toros

Marcell Ozuna hit his first home run of the winter season, and the Gigantes del Cibao defeated the Toros del Este 5-4 in the Dominican Baseball League on Friday.

Ozuna, Richard Ureña and Henry Urrutia each hit solo home runs to support a solid effort by starter Tyler Alexander (2-2), who scored the win after covering six innings with three-run ball and five hits.

The loss went to Jorge Martínez (0-2), after allowing four touchdowns and six hits in 3 2/3 innings.

In Santo Domingo, the Leones del Escogido unraveled a tight encounter with a five-touchdown attack in the bottom of the eighth inning and ended up beating the Tigres del Licey 8-2.

Michael Beltré was 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs, Sandy Diaz was 3-1 with two RBIs and Joe Dunand added an RBI double.

Iván Nova (1-0) scored the victory after launching five innings of just one career and two hits. The disaster went to the record of Steve Moyers (0-1), punished with three touchdowns and four hits in just one and two-thirds inning.

In San Pedro de Macorís, the Águilas Cibaeñas came back and beat the Estrellas Orientales 4-2.

Luis Valenzuela hit a two-run RBI single and Yairo Muñoz took advantage of a wild pitch to score, during a three-touchdown attack in the top of the ninth inning.

The Giants lead the circuit with a record of 11-8, followed by the Stars (10-8), Eagles (9-9), Leones (9-9), Toros (8-10) and Tigres (8-11).
