Venezuelan catcher Elías Díaz reaches a 3-year, $ 14.5 million agreement with the Rockies

DENVER – The Colorado Rockies agreed to a three-year, $ 14.5 million contract with catcher Elías Díaz.

The announced agreement includes a season in which the Venezuelan could opt for salary arbitration, and two years in which he would be in a position to declare himself a free agent.

Diaz will get $ 3 million next season, $ 5.5 million in 2023 and $ 6 million in 2024.

The player, who turned 31 on Wednesday, hit .246 last season with 18 home runs, his career-high and tied for third-highest among NL catchers this season.

Likewise, he retired with his shots 42.1% of the runners who tried to steal a base from him. Only his compatriot Salvador Perez, of the Kansas City Royals, surpassed that figure.

Diaz, a right-handed hitter, was hired by Colorado as a minor league free agent in January 2020, and made the first team seven months later. He hit .235 in 26 games with Colorado during that season, shortened by the pandemic.

The Pittsburgh Pirates signed Diaz in May 2009. He hit .250 in 250 games with that club from 2015-19.

He also hit 13 home runs.
