A new city, the main legacy that the 2022 World Cup will leave for the people of Qatar

The 2022 Qatar World Cup that will start exactly one year from now will leave a legacy.

Great sports feats? The rise of a new soccer hero? The indelible chapter of one of the great national team classics? It’s possible.

But I am referring to a certainty. So much so that it has an area of 35 square kilometers and is made of steel, cement and iron.

A city.

The north coast of Qatar, in the municipality of Al Daayen, it was practically a desert when the country was chosen by FIFA to host the 2022 World Cup.

Among the proposals that seduced the highest soccer entity back in 2010 was building a city from scratch, who was going to be called Lusail and it would house the stadium of the final.

More than a decade has passed since that time. And where there was nothing but sand, construction is now being completed on a 35-square-kilometer city where about 200,000 people are expected to live once the World Cup is over.

The epicenter of the new city, whose surface includes an area of islands, will effectively be the ‘Iconic Stadium of Lusail’, where 10 World Cup matches will be played, among them the final. With a capacity for 86,250 spectators, the venue is completely surrounded by water and can only be accessed by one of the six entrance bridges.

Qatar’s policy is to use sport as a letter of introduction to the West. The World Cup is his most ambitious bet. And within her, Lusail appears as the gem.

But we are talking about legacy, as I said at the beginning.

After the World Cup, Lusail will be home to at least 200 thousand people and it will become the first ‘entertainment city’ in the region: in addition to residential areas, with schools and health centers, it will allocate 180,000 square meters of its surface to offer leisure.

Theme parks, two golf courses, shopping centers, 12 five-star hotels, luxury stores and restaurants will be part of the combo.
