One year away from the World Cup: key dates on the road to Qatar 2022

This Sunday, November 21, the final countdown finally begins, which will conclude a year later with the first match of the Qatar 2022 World Cup. Next year, the planet of football will have as its main objective the ecumenical event, heading to which will have several key dates to pay attention to.

Sunday, November 21, 2021: There will be a great celebration in Doha, in which the clock that will mark the days and hours for the start of the World Cup will be inaugurated. The event, dubbed “Join the Beat” by FIFA and the organizers, will take place on the picturesque Corniche seafront and will be available online.

Friday, November 26, 2021: Draw for the European playoffs and the intercontinental playoffs in Zurich. It will be a key day for the 12 UEFA teams who aspire to the three remaining places, as they will meet their rivals. In addition, it will be defined how the last two qualifying matches will be played, between a team from South America, one from Asia, one from Concacaf and the representative from Oceania. For the first time, it will be a one-game neutral field in June.

Tuesday, November 30, 2021: Start of the FIFA Arab Cup, a tournament that will be played this year on the same dates and in the same stadiums as the World Cup. It will serve as a kind of “dress rehearsal”, organized by FIFA. Qatar is the only participant in this event that has already qualified for the World Cup. So could Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, Lebanon and Oman.

January 2022: With a date to be confirmed, the FIFA Club World Cup will be played in the United Arab Emirates, a short distance from Qatar. Surely, many leading players will repeat in the World Cup.

Thursday, January 27, 2022: After several years, there will be a World Cup qualification day in January. South America, Concacaf and Asia will play matches this day.

Tuesday, February 1, 2022: Second day of the penultimate double date of the qualifying phase in the aforementioned continents. Ecuador, Iran, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Canada, the United States, Mexico and Panama could ensure their classification. In Concacaf the date will be triple.

Thursday, March 24, 2022: The Qualifiers begin to be defined. There will be activity on all continents, with the start in Oceania, the penultimate day in South America and Asia, the semis of the European play-offs, the first leg of the final phase in Africa and date 12 in Concacaf.

Tuesday March 29: Final round of Qualifiers around the world. Europe will define their last three qualifiers, Africa their five and Asia, Concacaf and South America will conclude their qualifying phase before the continental play-offs.

Thursday, March 31: World Cup draw in Doha. For the first time, the 32 classified will not be defined, but there will be 30 selected.

Saturday, May 28, 2022: 2021/22 UEFA Champions League final in Saint Petersburg.

June 2022: Argentina-Italy in the “intercontinental national cup” and in tribute to Diego Maradona. The date has not yet been defined, but it would be one of the great games prior to the World Cup.

Monday, June 13, 2022: First match of the intercontinental playoffs, in a neutral venue.

Tuesday, June 14, 2022: Second match of the intercontinental playoffs, in a neutral venue.

Beginning of September 2022: Last FIFA week before the World Cup. It will be the final opportunity for the teams to play friendly preparation matches, as there will be no international break in October.

Saturday, October 29, 2022: Final of the Copa Libertadores.

Weekend of November 13, 2022: The European leagues begin their World Cup break and release the players, just over a week before the World Cup.

Monday, November 21, 2022: Opening match of the 2022 World Cup. Qatar against rival to be defined.

Sunday, November 18, 2022: World Cup Final in Lusail.
