Davis Cup: Germany rules out rest for Djokovic

Michael Kohlmann, captain of the German Davis Cup team that will debut against Serbia on Saturday in Group F of the Finals, doubts that his Balkan counterpart will rest Novak Djokovic, who landed on Tuesday night in Innsbruck (Austria), until the quarterfinals because that would be, he said, playing in “his second suit.”

“I do not imagine that he will rest until the quarterfinals,” he said today about the participation of the world number one. “If Serbia really decides to do it, they would have to step over us first. But I can’t imagine them playing in their second suit.”

Austrian team captain Stefan Koubek, who completes Group F, instead expressed his confidence that the arrival of Djokovic in just enough time would give them some chance of beating him. “He arrived yesterday. Although he has had enough time to train, there could be a small chance of catching him with a changed foot on Friday,” said the captain. “This has happened in the past and it can happen again. Dennis has the tools to upset him,” he said in reference to his player Dennis Novak, 118th in the ATP ranking.

Serbia plays these finals thanks to an invitation, after falling in the quarterfinals against Russia in the 2019 edition. Group F, one of the two that will be played in Innsbruck behind closed doors due to the negative figures of the Covid pandemics in Austria will begin on Friday with the Serbia-Austria clash, continue on Saturday with Serbia-Germany and close on Sunday with Germany-Austria, a duel between neighbors in which the public will be particularly missed, both captains agreed.

Neither Germany has Alexander Zverev, brand new champion of the ATP finals and who already announced his absence from Davis weeks ago, nor does Austria have Dominic Thiem in their ranks. Dominik Koepfer and Jan Lennard Struff, 50th and 51st in the world, are the main weapons of the Germans and Dennis Novak and Jurij Rodionov (139th) those of the Austrians.
