SANTIAGO PEDRO DE MACORÍS, Dominican Republic – Albert Pujols ended a two-week absence and returned to activity on Tuesday to contribute to the Leones del Escogido 5-2 win over Águilas Cibaeñas in the Dominican Baseball League .
The historic Dominican player was absent for a couple of weeks after traveling to the United States to attend to personal commitments, and returned to activity on Tuesday to hit 4-2 with a run scored in the Lions victory. Jonathan Guzmán was 4-2 with a triple and an RBI, Iván Castillo 3-1 with an RBI and Francisco Urbáez 4-1 with an RBI to lead the winners’ attack.
The victory went to Penn Murfee (1-0) with two blank innings of just one hit and three strikeouts, and Ramón Rosso lost (0-1), after allowing three touchdowns and five hits in three innings.
In La Romana, the Gigantes del Cibao exploded with a seven-touchdown attack in the top of the ninth inning to clinch a spectacular 7-3 victory over the Toros del Este.
Major League Baseball player Marcell Ozuna hit a one-run RBI double, Henry Urrutia drove in two touchdowns with a single, while Wilin Rosario and Otto Lopez also produced home runs with hits.
At Santo Domingo, Christian Betancourt was 4-2 with two RBIs, including a one-touchdown RBI single in the top of the ninth inning to break a tie and give the Estrellas Orientales a 3-2 win over the Tigres del Licey to maintain the leadership of the circuit.
Estrellas Orientales lead the circuit with a 13-8 record, followed by Gigantes del Cibao (12-10), Águilas Cibaeñas (11-10), Leones del Escogido (10-11), Toros del Este (9-12) and Tigres del Licey (9-13).
