Ecuador appears in the route of Spain as the first obstacle in the way of the final phase of the Davis Cup. In Madrid and with the majority of the public against it, the South American team is on point against the last champion of the competition.
Raúl Viver, Captain of the Ecuadorian team since 1994, told EFE that it is a feat that his people have reached these instances of the maximum team tournament, on their own merits, and therefore compared his entry into the group with Spain and Russia with the religious parable of “David against Goliath”.
It would seem that the options are minimal but the team will cling to them, led by the number one seed, Emilio Gomez. Together with Roberto Quiroz they will be the titular singles, and they will be accompanied by Diego Hidalgo and Gonzalo Escobar, in doubles.
Spain, meanwhile, will not have the injured Rafael Nadal, but still they have a formidable team, with Pablo Carreño Busta, Albert Ramos (replacing Roberto Bautista Agut) as well as Marcel Granollers and Feliciano López. It should be remembered that Carlos Alcaraz will not be available for having tested positive for Covid-19.
