“An extra motivation”: this is how the world number one, the Serbian Novak Djokovic, defined his feelings about the crossing of the Davis Cup semifinals that will face his team with Croatia, which he has already won twice.
Both antecedents, in 2010 and 2015, resulted in a clear victory for the Serbs, once at each one’s home and never on neutral ground, as will happen at the Madrid Arena, the venue for the current final phase.
Croatia reaches the semifinals after winning Group D, which they shared with Australia (3-0) and Hungary (2-1), and defeating Italy (2-1) in the round of 16.
Serbia was second in group F, in which they beat Austria 3-0 and lost 2-1 to Germany, and eliminated Kazakhstan 2-1 in the round of 16.
In 2010, in the quarterfinals of the world group, Serbia won 4-1 away from home in Split, en route to their first and only title. Five years later, in the first round of the same group, they prevailed 5-0 at home.
Croatia has two Davis Cup titles, obtained in 2005 and 2018. This was the last played under the classic format.
