The Challenge Cup began its 2021/22 season with two matches on Friday: they were Lyon and Newcastle triumphs over Gloucester and Worcester, respectively. The action will continue on Saturday with the remaining four games.
LYON 19-13 GLOUCESTER (Friday)
The French team was present from the opening whistle, annoying Gloucester, who took a long time to find cohesion among his team on the field. Despite the fact that Lyon set the pace of play, both teams loaned the ball, without major dangerous situations near the alien ingoal. The scoreboard swelled thanks to penalties and the first try came from the hand of Taufua, a situation that further emboldened the locals to end up taking a narrow victory. Santiago Socino and Santiago Carreras were starters in the English team and the Argentine wing had to be substituted in the complement by concussion protocol.
NEWCASTLE 31-26 WORCESTER (Friday)
The locals shook the score with a Wright try less than a minute into the game, but the opponent managed to recover shortly after with a visit to the rival ingoal. The sequence of one try per side was repeated again in the complement, but the key to define the victory was in the effectiveness of the kickers: Haydon Wood, of Newcastle, added four times while Searle, of Worcester, in only two.
