Steve Kerr, a three-time NBA champion coach with the Golden State Warriors, was selected as Team USA’s next coach, sources told ESPN.
Kerr will replace Gregg Popovich and lead a reshaped US coaching staff heading to the 2023 World Cup and the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Kerr’s coaching staff will include Phoenix Suns coach Monty Williams, Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra and Gonzaga coach Mark Few, sources said.
A formal announcement is expected soon, the sources said.
Kerr was an assistant on Popovich’s gold medal-winning team in Tokyo this summer, and Williams was a member of Mike Krzyzewski’s gold-medal team in 2016. Spoelstra is a two-time NBA champion with the Heat, and Few has transformed Gonzaga in one of college basketball’s elite programs.
The formation of the coaching staff is the first major decision of Grant Hill’s tenure as USA Basketball CEO. He replaced Jerry Colangelo, who retired after four gold medal-winning teams with Krzyzewski and Popovich as coaches.
