With home runs by José Siri, Gigantes defeats Águilas and reaches leadership in Dominican League

José Siri hit a two-touchdown home run and the Gigantes del Cibao defeated the Águilas Cibaeñas 6-1 on Saturday, reaching the top spot in the Dominican Baseball League.

Siri, player for the Houston Astros, propped up an explosive six-run attack in the bottom of the eighth to give the Giants the victory, with only five games left in the regular season.

Juan Minaya (1-0) worked one 1/3 inning without allowing runs to score the win. The setback was for Julián Fernández (1-1), after allowing two touchdowns in just a third of the inning.

In Santo Domingo, Major League Baseball player Nomar Mazara drove in two runs with a single and the Tigres del Licey beat the Toros del Este 2-1.

Mazara’s hit was enough against the solid start of César Valdez (4-1), who allowed only one run and three hits in six innings with five strikeouts to take the win. Alfredo Simón (1-3) fell, after allowing two touchdowns in two and two-thirds innings.

In San Pedro de Macorís, the Lions of the Chosen One prevailed 7-4 over the Eastern Stars. Iván Castillo was 2-for-5 with two RBIs, René Pinto was 4-2 with an RBI and Franchys Cordero rushed one more with a single.

Los Gigantes y las Estrellas lead the circuit with a 19-16 record, followed by Águilas (18-17), Tigres (18-17), Leones (18-17) and Toros (13-22).
