Hertha Berlin vs. Borussia Dortmund - Match Report - December 18, 2021

(EFE) – Hertha Berlin opposed Borussia Dortmund’s favoritism on Saturday and won 3-2, bringing Bayern Munich’s lead at the head of the German Bundesliga over their closest pursuer to nine points.

Dortmund began with problems, both in attack – where neither Erling Haaland nor Donyell Malen connected – and in defense, where they allowed Hertha to arrive too easily on several occasions in the first quarter of an hour.

The first clear arrival came from Hertha, in minute 5, with a shot from Ekkelenkamp inside the area to which goalkeeper Manfred Hitz reacted with a good save. Ekkelenkamp was once again 1-0 on his feet, when he finished poorly in the 14th minute from excellent position; and a goal from Maolida, in the 15th, was disallowed by VAR for offside by Belfodil.

On the Dortmund side, the most notable were the overflows on the right wing of Thomas Meunier and two good arrivals from Marco Reus who in the 11th lost the hand-to-hand with the goalkeeper Alexander Schwollow who came out to cut the angle well and in the 13th he headed diverted to the center of Meunier

Haaland seemed like a good guard between the central Hertha and Malen, although he struggled by delaying his position to have more balls, he also failed to connect with the game.

However, in one of the Norwegian’s first appearance came Dortmund’s goal, scored by Julian Brandt.

Haaland received a pass from Dahoud in the half moon and tried to settle the ball for a left-footed shot. Jürgen Mittelstädt snatched the ball from him, but the rebound caught it inside the Brandt area; that he defined with his shot to the first post over the body of the goalkeeper.

The goal did not give Dortmund peace of mind and the game remained disorderly and without clear control by either team.

When Hertha attacked Dortmund they had problems and in a counterattack, in the 55th minute, the draw came through Belfodil who, after receiving a long ball and surpassing Axel Witsel in speed, defined before the departure of Witsel.

In 57 Marco Richter scored the second for Hertha, with a shot with his right leg from outside the area.

Dortmund was close to the equalizer with a goal disallowed to Thorgan Hazard for millimeter offside and with a shot slightly above Dahoud in the 67th to a pass from Malen.

However, in the 69th minute Richter reappeared and scored the third, with a strong shot taking advantage of a rebound after Hitz blocked a shot from Belfodil.

In the 83rd, at the center of Raphael Guerreiro from the right wing, Steffen Tigges scored a header and achieved the final 3-2.

The final minutes were pressure from Dortmund on the opposite area but without creating clear possibilities.
