Michael Devine responded with a dominant start and the Sultanes de Monterrey defeated the Naranjeros de Hermosillo 5-0 on Sunday in the seventh and final game of their postseason series to become the fourth invited to the semifinals of the Mexican Pacific League.
The Sultans will face the Charros de Jalisco in the next round starting on Tuesday, January 4. In the other semifinal, the Algodoneros de Guasave will try to derail the current two-time champions of the circuit, the Tomateros de Culiacán.
Devine (1-0) covered seven scoreless innings, pitching just five hits with seven strikeouts to win the game. It was lost by Wilmer Ríos (1-1) after receiving five touchdowns and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings.
Fernando Pérez hit a two-run homer, Aldo Flores went 4-2 with a triple and two RBIs and Josuán Hernández hit an RBI double for Monterrey.
