S T. LOUIS, Missouri – The St. Louis Cardinals canceled their annual winter warm-up promotional event due to the Major League Baseball lockout.
The event, which was scheduled for January 15 and 17, would feature the presence of players, something unsustainable because MLB blocked the Players Association after the expiration of the baseball collective agreement on December 1.
“The winter warm-up is about fans interacting with the players and, unfortunately, current circumstances prevent us from planning the event as usual,” Cardinals president Bill DeWitt III said in a statement Tuesday.
Attorneys for MLB and the union have not met to discuss core economic issues since the lockout began.
The players are scheduled to report to spring training on February 16, leaving a little over a month for a deal that allows for a timely start.
