Champion Canada: defeated Spain in the ATP Cup final

Canada, led by young talents Félix Auger-Aliassime (11th) and Denis Shapovalov (14th), became ATP Cup 2022 champion after beating Spain 2-0. In this way, the Canadians took revenge after the final lost to the Europeans in the Davis Cup 2019.

Due to the characteristics of the Spanish players, consistent and regular from the baseline, the series was imagined intense and disputed. Nothing was left of the plans and both singles matches ran with that luck. The first to jump onto the pitch were Denis Shapovalov vs. Pablo Carreño Busta (20th) and, quickly, in the first game of the meeting, a synthesis of what the match would be could be seen.

After 13 minutes and 46 seconds, the young left-hander bypassed a large number of break points generated by his rival and from there he was able to finally stand on the court. With patience in setting up the points and great acceleration both with the drive and with the backhand, “Shapo” took out a sublime victory by 6-4 and 6-3 to give your country the first point in the series.

Backed by your partner’s victory, Felix Auger-Aliassime, who had fallen categorically to Daniil Medvedev in his semi-final single, faced Roberto Bautista Agut (19th) Y put the bow to a spectacular tournament. After two hours and nine minutes, he beat the tennis of the man born in Castellón de la Plana by 7-6 (3) and 6-3.

In a game of great flight and great intensity, the Canadian was another with respect to the key of his country with Russia and the conviction in each of the points was key to beat a tough opponent, accustomed to big battles. The first set lasted for more than an hour, but in the tie-breaker, Auger-Aliassime made great executions and took advantage of the score.

The second set continued on the path of balance: firm serves from one side and the other, few errors and grueling rallies. Finally, the Montreal native, who made 38 winners, broke the Spaniard’s serve in the eighth game and he closed the game with astonishing serenity, shaping one of the most outstanding victories of his career.

Canada settled the key 2-0 and became the champion of the third edition of the contest. During his tour, he faced the United States, Germany and Great Britain for Group C; beat Russia in the semifinals and ended the story against Spain.
