Carlo Ancelotti appeared before the final of the Spanish Super Cup that Real Madrid will play against Athletic Club de Bilbao (Sunday 1:30 pm ET by ESPN+). The Italian came out in defense of his team after the criticism received for the game displayed by the whites in the Clásico.
“I respect all facets of football. If one only thinks of possession as a weapon to win the game, perfect. I respect it. Just as I respect the way Cádiz played against us. The system and the perfect game do not exist If I play against, I’m not going to win all the games, and if I play with possession, neither. If one day I defend, we’re not defensive”, commented the coach who, in addition, completed his exponent by recalling “we are the team that scores the most goals. And when they say we play against it, it doesn’t bother me because it’s not easy to play against it, I’m delighted”.
Ancelotti still has doubts about David Alaba, who was sidelined at the last minute due to muscle discomfort before the match against Barça, and about Marco Asensio, suffering from overload.
In line with the game system, Ancelotti brought up the example of Vinicius and the difficulty that the team has as a group, and the young Brazilian in particular, when facing closed defenses.
“We can push Vinicius to play inside and help Benzema. He scored like that against Valencia. He’s a player who can enjoy going inside without the ball, not just dribbling outside”, declared Carletto.
For Ancelotti, the final against Athletic Club will be “an even match”. He has a great relationship with Marcelino, which he exemplified by showing the Asturian a photo of when the two met in 1987 in the UEFA Cup. Marcelino, at that time, played for Sporting de Gijón and Ancelotti defended the colors of Arrigo Sacchi’s AC Milan.
“It’s a skin relationship. We don’t have a relationship of seeing each other, but he is a coach that I like a lot, who controls small details very well. I saw a photo in which we played together, I liked it. It is a well-organized team that never surrenders”, said the Madrid coach.
Ancelotti also joked about the roulette that Mendy did in the 85th minute in his own box against Barcelona: “I don’t remember it…”, he laughed.
“I remember the dribble at 2-1, but I don’t remember that move… (laughs). He is a very strong player, who sometimes takes risks, but he helps us at the start. I have to say that in my classification after the game against Barcelona, it was one of the best.”
Finally, the coach recognized that the team is in a good moment and that the goal is to reach the optimum point of the year, which was a month ago.
“Our best moment was before Christmas, against Atlético, but we’re fine and the personality of the team leaves me calm. This leaves me calm, I know the ability of the players in these games. My job is easy because I don’t have to motivate myself or concentration, because they have it. The less he touches, the better,” Ancelotti concluded.
