FC Cologne vs. Bayern Munich - Match Report - January 15, 2022

Bayern thrashed Cologne 4-0 away with three goals from Robert Lewandowski and one from Corentin Tolisso, allowing them to re-establish a six-point lead over second-placed Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund.

The victory was important for Bayern after Dortmund, with their 5-1 victory against Freiburg on Friday, put themselves within three points and after losing last week 1-2 against Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Bayern recovered Manuel Neuer who was in goal after being absent last week due to a positive for coronavirus.

Tolisso, who had also been absent last week due to covid 19, was also in the starting eleven and other players who had been absent for the same reason -Leroy Sané, Omar Richards and Tanguy Nianzou- were on the bench and entered the field already started the second time.

Colonia came out to stand up to Bayern with quite advanced lines and trying to hinder the departure of the Bavarian club through high pressure.

However, Bayern’s first blow came too soon. In the 9th minute Lewandowski scored with a shot inside the box from a pass from Thomas Müller.

Bayern’s second goal came in the 25th minute through Tolisso. The play began with a long cross from Marcel Sabitzer from the left, Tolisso headed the ball into the area, Müller returned it short and Tolisso scored with a volley.

Until that moment, Colonia had only had one arrival, a header from Anthony Modeste in the 22nd minute that did not represent any problem for Manuel Neuer.

The 0-3 was close in the 28th with a point-blank shot from Müller before which goalkeeper Marwin Schwäbe reacted with a good save.

Then Colonia had a good phase. In the 31st minute a goal by Mark Huth was annulled by the VAR for offside and in the 45th minute Duda shot poorly from a good position after a good advance down the left wing.

The match was sentenced in the 62nd minute, when Lewandowski scored the third from a pass from Sané, who had entered the field a minute earlier to relieve Jamal Musiala.

Colonia tried everything to make up the result a bit, they were close to the goal of honor with a shot off the crossbar by Andersson in minute 71, but in minute 74 they conceded the fourth when Lewandowski scored again from a pass from Sane.

In another game of the day, Union Berlin won 2-1 at home against Leipzig.
